The state of Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection has tentatively awarded a contract to BDS Waste Disposal Inc., Corinna, Maine, to process, shred, and market around 470,000 tires from two sites in Maine. The two sites are located in Augusta, where there are about 70,000 tires; and Durham, where there are around 400,000 tires.
While the agency has notified BDS, according to state law, no contract can become effective prior to two weeks after all the bidders have been notified, according to Clifton Eliason, a spokesman for the state DEP. There were a total of three bidders on the project.
BDS, which was the low bidder, bid $81.90 per ton for the finished product. The finished product needs to be a type B shredded material.
The cleanup project is expected to begin by the beginning of February. Plans are for the project to be complete within eight months.
