The state of Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection will be holding a public hearing Aug. 18th to hear feedback on the state’s plan to implement a statewide electronics recycling project.
The proposed program would establish a collection and recycling system to ensure the handling, recycling and disposal of televisions and computer monitors. Under the proposed rule number, 06-096 CMR 415, individual communities would be empowered to set up their own collection centers, as well as develop markets for the end products. Further, the bill stipulates that manufacturers’ costs must not exceed $.48 per pound.
The state legislation would apply to businesses that are engaged in the consolidation of television and computer monitors generated by residents in the state.
The state DEP will be accepting comments on the proposed law until Aug. 28th.
