The governor of Maine, John Baldacci, signed into law April 22 a piece of legislation that is expected to boost the recycling of electronic equipment
The bill, titled "An Act To Protect Public Health and the Environment by Providing for a System of Shared Responsibility for the Safe Collection and Recycling of Electronic Waste," will require manufacturers of electronic equipment to accept some of the responsibility for recycling the material.
The bill is expected to go into effect by this summer, requires manufacturers to create consolidation centers by the beginning of 2006 where municipalities may drop off computers, television sets and other types of electronic equipment.
Additionally, the law requires manufacturers to take some of the responsibility for shipping and recycling the material.
