Hardwick Landfill, owned by Casella Waste Systems, has been assesses an $18,000 penalty by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for violating state regulations. Casella purchased the landfill in March 2003.
Staff from the DEP observed the disposal of unacceptable waste, including automobile tires and white goods, within the new operating cell of the landfill during an inspection this past September.
Storm water control and odor violations were also noted during the inspection. The facility has subsequently instituted revised waste control procedures and inspections at the landfill. The company is testing new materials for daily cover in an effort to prevent nuisance odors. DEP has also required Casella to install an active gas collection system at the landfill to control odors.
