The Daily Item, Lynn, Massachusetts, reports the Lynn Department of Public Works (DPW) has organized a seven-member outreach team to educate residents on recycling practices.
“Our mission was to raise the recycling rate of Lynn so we can do better stuff with our money than spend it on burning trash,” team supervisor Alisha Raby Cefalo told the newspaper.
During the campaign, team members educated residents online and in person about proper recycling techniques, receiving 155 pledges from residents to be more mindful of these practices. The effort brought Lynn’s recycling rate up from 7 to 20 percent, the Item reports.
According to DPW’s Recycling Coordinator Julia Greene, residents who rejected the pledge did not feel recycling affected them directly.
“Once you get a percentage of people on the street to do the right thing, then it’ll flip, and everyone will be doing the right thing,” Greene told the newspaper.
