The Louisiana State Senate passed Senate Bill 309 on May 18 by a vote of 34-1 that would pay money to companies who process scrap tires by using money designed to find new markets for the material.
The bill will now be submitted to the House Environmental Committee for hearings and debate.
According to local press reports four companies in Louisiana who shred waste tires are owed around $3.7 million.
Residents in the state pay a $2 per tire fee whenever they have new tires put on their automobiles. The money is used to pay for the disposal of the scrap tires.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality would pay processors for shredding the tire.
