Citizens of Charleston, S.C., and surrounding communities have enjoyed a ceremonial summer with the opening of the three-mile-long Ravenel Bridge.
The $630 million bridge, which features 570-foot-tall towers toward the middle of the structure, crosses the Cooper River to connect Charleston with nearby Mount Pleasant.
It is replacing two older structures that will be demolished and recycled throughout this year and next.
Materials from the Grace Bridge, which opened in 1929, and the Pearman Bridge, built in the mid-1960s, will either be recycled as scrap or used to create artificial reefs in the ocean, according to published reports. Latest from Recycling Today
