Logoplaste UK and Objectform win Green Categories at Plastics Industry Awards

U.K.-based startup honored for its 100-percent-recycled filament made from scrap ABS plastic.

Plastics Industry Awards judges said the Filacycle product range developed by Objectform allows the emerging 3D printing sector to embrace a readymade green solution.

Winners of the 2015 Plastics Industry Awards (PIAs) were revealed on 9 October by actor and comedian Alan Davies at the London event.

Bottle-making company Logoplaste UK held onto the title for Best Environmental or Energy Efficiency Programme for the third year running, while 3D printing specialists Objectform won the Best Recycled Plastic Product of the Year Category. Both companies are based in the United Kingdom.

Logoplaste UK undertook a number of initiatives across its five UK sites to lightweight clients’ product ranges and reduce material waste while undertaking an energy-saving programme. At its Coleford site for example, staff redesigned the Lucozade and Ribena product ranges, achieving considerable material reduction while retaining the bottles’ distinctive shapes. PIA judges said the combined projects showed how energy and environmental management can improve business profits and customer relations.

Objectform, a Sheffield-based start-up, created a 100 percent recycled filament (or ink) for use in 3D printing, derived from Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) waste. It was tested extensively and received excellent feedback from 3D printing experts, 3D printing retailers, consumers and plastic manufacturers across the world.

PIA judges said, “By developing and promoting the use of recycled polymer, the Filacycle product range allows the emerging 3D printing sector to embrace a readymade green solution. It is a brilliant demonstration of how innovation and circular economy thinking combined can lead to cutting edge sustainable green solutions.”

SENNEBOGEN 340G telehandler improves the view in Macon County, NC

An elevated cab is one of several features improving operational efficiency at the Macon County Solid Waste Management agency in North Carolina. When it comes to waste management, efficiency, safety and reliability are priorities driving decisions from day one, according to staff members of the Macon County Solid Waste Management Department in western North Carolina. The agency operates a recycling plant in a facility originally designed to bale incoming materials. More recently, the building has undergone significant transformations centered around one machine: a SENNEBOGEN telehandler (telescopic handler).

Sustainability has become a running theme among PIA winners in recent years, with energy efficient processes, product lightweighting and waste-reduction initiatives capturing the judges’ attention. Processor of the Year, Nifco UK, for example has implemented a production system to cut waste and improve productivity as well as a logistics programme to streamline processes and boost stock accuracy levels.
