Lithium-ion battery recycling facility receives permit

SungEel MCC Americas plans to build a lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Endicott, New York. The company’s joint venture partner, SungEel HiTech, currently operates a similar facility in South Korea.

According to WBNG.com, the website for 12 News in Johnson City, New York, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has granted SungEel MCC Americas an air facility permit and a solid waste management facility (recycling) registration for its proposed lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Endicott. The DEC had determined that the emissions and operations in SungEel MCC Americas’ application were in full compliance with the state’s rules and regulations regarding air emissions.

SungEel MCC Americas’ facility would be the “first of its kind” in the U.S. However, 12 News reports that some residents in the area are concerned about the safety of the facility. Most of those concerns are regarding the flammability of lithium-ion batteries.
