John Likarish, marketing manager for The Doe Run Co., has joined the board of The Advanced Lead-Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC). Likarish also was named director of ALABC’s public affairs and marketing committee. In his position with ALABC, Likarish will play a role in communicating the progress made by the battery industry to meet renewable energy needs.
“In order to meet the energy needs of a growing, global population, as well as address environmental concerns related to carbon footprint, we must look at alternative energy sources,” Likarish says. “The lead-acid battery, which has been the workhorse for transportation energy storage, is evolving. It will support a major role in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and renewable energy storage for applications such as solar and wind.”
Power from alternative sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines, can be stored in batteries during non-peak hours and released into the power grid to balance energy load leveling.
Doe Run is a founding member of the ALABC, which was formed in 1992 to pool resources from more than 50 battery manufacturers and their suppliers to improve the design, construction and performance of lead-acid batteries.
