Light Bulb Recycling Program Being Developed

Fujisash Co. logistics subsidiary Fuji Sogyo Inc. has been working with a Minnesota-based manufacturer of fluorescent-bulb-recycling equipment to develop related technology.

The two companies have created a method of removing mercury from the glass tubes by vaporizing it. The new method can cut the cost of recycling by 10-15 percent, compared with the conventional method of rinsing the tubes in water.

Fuji Sogyo has installed the equipment at a plant in Samukawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, and plans to put it into full operation next April. It will collect bulbs primarily from railway companies and convenience stores, aiming to gather 3 million bulbs in fiscal 2002, rising to 6 million bulbs by fiscal 2004. Asia Pulse
