United Kingdom-based Liberty House Group says it has signed a provisional agreement with Tata Steel UK to acquire steel pipe production mills located in Hartlepool, England.
Liberty House says the 42-inch and 84-inch longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW) pipe mills at Hartlepool make heavy-duty steel pipe for the energy, power and construction industries in the U.K. and beyond. The mills have 250,000 metric tons of capacity.
In May 2017, Liberty announced the acquisition from Tata Steel of its Specialty Steels business, which employs more than 1,700 people in Yorkshire, Lancashire and the West Midlands of England. Earlier in July, Liberty House announced that it had purchased a steel merchant bar in Scunthorpe, England, from the administrators of the former Caparo Industries.
Also in July, the GFG (Gupta Family Group) Alliance, of which Liberty is part, announced an agreement to acquire Australian steel producer the Arrium Group out of administration. Arrium’s operations, in addition to steelmaking, include metal recycling and iron ore mining.
The addition of the Hartlepool pipe mills would bring Liberty’s U.K. workforce to nearly 5,000 people located at more than 30 sites, making it one of Britain's largest industrial employers, according to the firm.
Liberty says it also intends to upgrade its steelmaking assets in Australia and its plate mill at Dalzell, Scotland, to be able to make American Petroleum Institute (API)-grade plate steel capable of being rolled into large diameter LSAW pipes in Hartlepool for oil and gas pipelines globally.
“This step will inspire investments not only in Hartlepool but also in our upstream plate mill at Dalzell, and potentially also at the steel shop at Whyalla in Australia in due course, to give us a fully-integrated world class capability to supply pipeline projects,” says Sanjeev Gupta, executive chairman of the Liberty House Group.
