Lessons in Electronics Recycling

NERC & IAER co-sponsor program in conjunction with NERC Fall Conference.

The Northeast Recycling Council Inc. (NERC) and the International Association of Electronics Recyclers (IAER) have teamed together to present a short educational program that addresses two of the most timely national issues facing electronics recycling: What makes a good electronics recycling service provider, and what are the best practices for running an electronics recycling collection program?

Anyone involved or interested in these issues can benefit from attending these courses, whether you are in the industry, government or not-for-profit sector, according to a bulletin from NERC.  The courses are scheduled in conjunction with the NERC Fall Conference Oct. 21-23, 2003, at the Hotel Northampton in downtown Northampton, Mass.

The educational program begins Thursday, Oct. 23, with "Certification: What makes a good electronics recycling service provider?" from 9 a.m. to noon.

This course provides an overview and insight into the requirements and processes involved with the certification of electronics recycling facilities -- including environmental management standards, ISO and IAER certification.

The course is organized and conducted by John Powers who led the development of the IAER Certification Program and also serves as an ISO consultant assisting companies on environmental, health and safety management systems.

Best management practices for operating electronics collection programs" runs from 1:30 p.m.  – 4:30 p.m. and is designed to help organizations involved with or planning electronics recycling collection programs to ensure that the program is successful. The course will share hands-on experiences with designing, implementing and operating electronics collection programs in the Northeast, as well as the results of NERC’s comprehensive studies: “The National Survey: Learning from Existing Programs” and “Used Electronics Market Study Survey Analysis.”  Participants in the course will receive copies of each document on CD-ROM, as well as of the seminal manual on electronics collection operations “Setting Up & Operating Electronics Recycling/Reuse Programs: A Manual for Municipalities and Counties.”

The course is organized and conducted by Lynn Rubinstein, Executive Director of NERC and author “The National Survey: Learning from Existing Programs," “Setting Up & Operating Electronics Recycling/Reuse Programs: A Manual for Municipalities and Counties,” and a contributing author to the just published “Used Electronics Market Study Survey Analysis.”

Class sizes are limited  Registrations cost $95 for both courses or $50 for a single course and will be accepted through October 16. To register, visit the NERC Web site at https://www.webrover.com/ssl/nerc/keyregister.html
