Germany-based Gerhard Lang Recycling GmbH has demonstrated it is not afraid to explore or invest in new technology, especially when it can help the firm widen the profits from its processing and trading activities.
Earlier this year, sorting equipment producer Tomra Recycling, also based in Germany, worked with Lang Recycling to deploy an Autosort Pulse unit as part of a research project testing the machine’s ability to identify and sort aluminum alloys.
Two years ago, Lang Recycling’s use of RSBI business intelligence software provided by Ireland-based AMCS was the focus of a case study prepared by the Ireland-based technology firm.
In that report, executives at Lang Recycling indicate RSBI is helping it manage the wide array of information tied to buying, processing and trading some 400 grades of recyclable metal.
Lang Recycling collects and processes steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, brass and lead.
AMCS calls Lang Recycling’s inventory, in terms of both quantity and in-process category, one of the most important control variables for the recycling, which worked with AMCS to find a way to track everything in real-time.
“We were also aware of the fact that there was a lot of capital in our inventories, and we wanted to manage it more actively," Managing Director Maximillian Lang says in the case study.
“It’s important to work with specialized software so that any new development idea or trend can be immediately adopted by everyone to integrate it further,” says Alexander Schmidt, who in 2023 was Lang Recycling’s production and warehouse manager.
“A very significant factor in our industry is the transparency of business insights. This means that the inputs of the material must be analyzed as quickly as possible.”
AMCS adds, “It is crucial for the business that they can see where materials will go and where the value will be added in the process until they go out again.”
A mobile reporting app supplied by AMCS allows Lang Recycling employees to record and document inventory moves as they happen, according to the software provider. Then, RSBI makes it easier to make forecasts that are much better aligned to the sales flows, the firm says.
Maximillian Lang says the adoption of the technology has yielded recognizable top-line and bottom-line results.
“By using mobile reporting and AMCS RSBI, we were able to reduce our warehouse inventory by about 25 percent,” Lang says. “As a result, we were able to save around 40,000 euros ($46,000) in cost of capital.”

An elevated cab is one of several features improving operational efficiency at the Macon County Solid Waste Management agency in North Carolina. When it comes to waste management, efficiency, safety and reliability are priorities driving decisions from day one, according to staff members of the Macon County Solid Waste Management Department in western North Carolina. The agency operates a recycling plant in a facility originally designed to bale incoming materials. More recently, the building has undergone significant transformations centered around one machine: a SENNEBOGEN telehandler (telescopic handler).

Operating in a clearer and up-to-date inventory landscape has led to better flows of information among Lang Recycling’s more than 200 employees, according to AMCS.
“Because this real-time, intelligent optimization has brought them high-quality and readily available insights into their inventory management processes, they now also hold regular position management meetings,” according to the software company.
AMCS says its relationship with Lang Recycling has helped that firm “in raising employee awareness of the amount of capital that is tied up in inventories as well as improving the overall inventory transparency.”
