The Shredder Co. (TSC), Canutillo, Texas, has delivered and started up a 6060 WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) shredder system at Kuusakoski Recycling USA’s Philadelphia facility. The facility is a joint venture recycling operation between Kuusakoski Oy, Finland, and a local company called Kuusakoski Philadelphia LLC. The plant is the first of what Kuusakoski says it hopes will be a number of electronics recycling facilities it opens in the United States.
TSC’s Scott Newell says its 6060 WEEE shredder is its first shredder dedicated exclusively to shredding electronic scrap. While the shredder is similar to other systems that TSC has been manufacturing, the 6060 WEEE shredder has a number of special features for processing electronic scrap, the company says.
Rich Burgess, CEO and partner with Kuusakoski Recycling USA, says that the Philadelphia facility handles both ferrous, nonferrous and electronic scrap. He adds that the facility is the first for Kuusakoski in the United States.
While the company recently installed the shredding system at its Philadelphia plant, the facility itself has been in operation since late 2009.
Along with metals, the company also handles a significant amount of scrap plastics that it ships to Kuusakoski's European operation, which has far more years of expertise marketing scrap plastics.
Kuusakoski Recycling processes more than 2.5 million tons of scrap metal per year. The company operates scrap processing facilities in nine countries around the Baltic Sea and has trading offices in China and India.
Newell says TSC has a well-established, long-term relationship with Kuusakoski. Three of Kuusakoski’s seven shredders were provided by TSC. The WEEE shredder system Kuusakoski USA purchased is the fifth electronics shredding system that Kuusakoski Recycling now has in operation.
Burgess says that the facility does not conduct any demanufacturing or reusing of the obsolete electronics. Because of this, the company is RIOS certified.
