Knoxville Adds to Drop Off Centers

City also will be starting new program with Advanced Polymer Recycling.

The city of Knoxville, Tenn., has added a new recyclable drop-off center in the city, bringing the number of drop off centers in the city to eight. The center is located in downtown Knoxville. The city expects to add an additional center at a site to be determined, although it will be established in partnership with a Goodwill center. The new center will replace another center, which had to move.

The centers are all manned, and take in most of the traditional recyclable materials such as newspaper, plastics, and glass.

John Homa, a solid waste reduction specialist with the city, says the city typically takes in around 5,000 tons of recyclables a year through the program.

In addition to the drop off centers, the city also will be starting a new contact with Advanced Polymers Recycling. Under the program, which is slated to begin by the first half of December, the company, located in Knoxville, will be taking in all the recyclables collected through the city’s program. The contract is for two years and can be extended through three one-year contracts.
