A children’s book titled “Where Do Recyclable Materials Go?” has been published by Toronto-based Firewater Media Group as part of its EcoAdventures series.
The 40-page illustrated book by Sabbithry Persad follows the journey of recyclable materials from the Bailey household through to the MRF (materials recovery facility) process.
In the book, author Persad offers a statistical breakdown of MSW (municipal solid waste) composition by material and provides a 12-page tour of a MRF from the tipping floor, through the automated sorting and baling processes and to the outbound shipping dock.
“This place is awesome!” exclaims book character Peter Bailey when he first steps inside the MRF he will tour when he follows his runaway dog to the recycling plant.
The book describes (and in many cases illustrates) a variety of MRF equipment, including sorting stations, trommel screens, magnets, optical sorters and balers.
The end of the book offers additional recycling statistics and offers further recycling research and activity ideas.
Author Persad, the founder of Toronto-based online magazine Green Solutions, credits several recyclers and solid waste officials in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany for “help in vetting the content of the book.”
