Kentucky Cement Plant Considers Scrap Tires for Fuel

Kosmos Cement in Jefferson County, Ky., has revived a decade-old proposal to burn scrap tires for fuel, according to a report in the Courier-Journal (Louisville, Ky.).

 

Plant officials backed off of the plan in the early 1990s after some residents raised opposition. However, the plant is now under new management and reconsidering burning scrap tires in its 2,700-degree kiln, according to the report.

 

No decision can be made until the plant has conducted test burns that would allow documentation of any changes in emissions. Plant officials would also need to obtain local and state permits.
