Ken Mills Engineering supplies baler to UK plant

Cumbria Waste Group invests in 6-metric-tons-per-hour baler.

United Kingdom-based Cumbria Waste Group (CWG) is investing more than £500,000 ($770,000) to build a new baling facility at its Hespin Wood site, near Carlisle. As part of the investment, CWG will add a baler from Ken Mills Engineering (KME), also based in the U.K.

The baler will be used for compacting recyclables such as cardboard, plastics and cans. According to KME, the baler also will help CWG reduce disposal costs for its customers and allow the company to generate extra income for customers through the sale of their material in recycling markets.

The baler, which can process 6 metric tons of material per hour, will compact material collected from doorstep collection routes, drop-off sites and commercial contracts, including material processed by CWG’s £1.25 million ($1.9 million) materials recovery facility (MRF), which opened in 2014.

Mike Bareham, Cumbria Waste Group managing director, says, “We are continually seeking new ways to improve the recycling process, and through investment in new technology like this we are not only saving our customers money, we are also helping them to meet their environmental responsibilities as well.”

Adds Bareham, “The baler produces highly compacted, clean bales of material, such as cardboard and plastics, which can then be sold on the recycling markets and, in some cases, provide customers with a rebate on their [material].”
