Kansas Awards Grant Money for Recycling, Composting, Recovery

More than $800,00 allocated by state agency to boost recycling levels.

The state of Kansas announced grants totaling more than $825,000 are being issued to various groups. Money will go toward recycling, composting and waste recovery endeavors. The grants include projects for the reuse of C&D waste, recycling electronic waste collection and reclamation initiatives around the state," said Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

The grants range in their amount from $637 to $200,000 and include projects for enhancing local recycling efforts, as well as processing electronic waste.

The Governor’s Solid Waste Grants Advisory Committee made the award selections and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will distribute the grants to the15 awardees. Recipients include regional solid waste management authorities representing more than 30 counties, private organizations and non-profit programs.

More than $15 million has been awarded in grants since the program began in 1996. Below is a list of grant recipients:

Asset LifeCycle, LLC, Topeka, Shawnee, $200,000: Expand the current collection services to create an Electronic Reclamation and Waste Processing Facility.

Bahm Demolition, Inc., Silver Lake, Shawnee, $150,000 -- Purchase scales (2), grapple, roll-off containers (15), magnet, trailers (4), skid loader w/grapple arm, 3-yard wheel loader w/grapple bucket.

Class LTD, Columbus, Cherokee, $75,000 -- Purchase a sort conveyor system with box dumper, a forklift, scale, bins, a pulverizing system for glass, a trailer, and safety equipment.

Habitat ReStore (Habitat for Humanity-KC, MO), Kansas City, Jackson, $40,000 -- Purchase an 18 ft. box truck for collections in Johnson County.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity, Kansas City, Wyandotte, $40,000 -- Establish a ReStore in Wyandotte County.

Hodgeman County Economic Development, Inc., Jetmore, Hodgeman, $7,050 -- Purchase a Pro-gravity trailer for cardboard collection at the landfill.

Hoisington, City of, Hoisington, Barton, $13,895.85 -- Purchase Alley Cat trailer with additional bins and lids.

Lake Region Solid Waste Authority, Paola, Miami, $30,000 -- Establish electronic waste collection programs in all 6 counties & expand public education campaign.

Northwest Kansas Regional Recycling Org., Colby, Thomas, $100,000 -- Purchase ProTainer trailers with extra bins (Rawlins, Decatur, Sheridan Co.), 4 sets of bins (Gove Co.), 12 trailer bins (Thomas Co.), and building improvements for Sheridan Co.

Olathe -- City of, Olathe, Johnson, $20,000 -- Make site improvements for 2nd drop-off site, purchase (20) recycling containers, signage for old and new sites.

Plastics Recycling of Kansas, Inc., Wichita, Sedgwick, $45,000 -- Purchase and install a used horizontal baler.

Rooks County Landfill, Stockton, Rooks, $40,000 -- Purchase a pickup, recycling trailers & educational materials.

Sunflower RC&D Area, Inc., Harper, Harper, $50,000 -- Nine projects proposed including regional equipment, local program expansions and a buy recycle initiative.

U.S.D. #307 Ell-Saline, Brookville, Saline, $637.50 -- Purchase 20 3-bin recycling carts.

University of Kansas Center for Research, Inc., Lawrence, Douglas, $14,888.33 -- Purchase desk-side recycling containers and collection equipment for 6 buildings. (1200 offices)
