The Kansas Department of Health and Environment awards $1.5 million in grants to improve recycling and reduce solid waste disposal.
Secretary of Health and Environment Clyde Graeber announced the awarding of more than $1.55 million in grants for recycling, composting and solid waste source reduction programs for groups, companies and agencies in the state. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will distribute the grants to a total of 38 cities, counties, businesses and regional programs.
The grants, ranging from $4,050 to $120,000, were funded by a $1 per ton state fee on solid waste entering Kansas landfills.
Projects receiving grant funding included the enhancement of local recycling programs, yard waste composting and using waste wood as a fuel substitute in the manufacture of animal feed.
More than $12 million has been distributed in grants since the program began in 1996. Fees on solid waste entering Kansas landfills generate approximately $4.9 million each year.
Several of the grants awarded include the following: 1st Step Recycling, $80,000.00 to purchase equipment and building expansion for existing recycling program; 2nd Chance Woods, $25,000.00 to purchase skid loader, storage/ processing building, & solar kiln chambers;. Hunter Recycling, equipment – truck and shredder equipment -- awarded in form of grant award to enhance current paper recycling business; Industrial Crating, Inc., $50,000.00 to purchase truck and front end loader for pallet recycling business; Larned Recycling Center, $4,050.00 to purchase recycle bins and glass crusher for existing program; The city of Lawrence, $54,000.00 to purchase horizontal baler for existing recycling program; Recycling Connection, $50,000.00 to purchase equipment for metals recycling; Service Recycling, $25,000.00 to purchase containers for paper recycling; and the City of Wichita, $100,000.00 to purchase horizontal grinder to recycle various parts of the C & D waste stream.Latest from Recycling Today
