KAB cited several specific corporate efforts Dell has undertaken that led to being recognized by the nonprofit organization. The steps the computer company has taken to boost its sustainability efforts include the following, KAB says:
- All Dell products and solutions are designed with the environment in mind and without sacrificing performance or reliability. In fiscal year 2014, Dell used more than 10 million pounds of postconsumer recycled plastics in its products.
- Dell was the first company to offer free consumer recycling of its products, and the first to use certified closed-loop recycled plastics in its personal computers. Additionally, 21 Dell facilities buy 100 percent of their energy from renewables.
- In 2013, through more efficient fulfillment and increased purchases of renewable electricity, Dell reduced its greenhouse gas emissions from its facilities and logistics by 8 percent.
- Dell has reduced the energy intensity of its product portfolio by 23.2 percent over the last two years.
- Dell has partnered with Goodwill in more than 2,000 locations across the United States through its Dell Reconnect program, which has collected more than 374 million pounds of computer electronics for recycling since 2004. When combined with its services for businesses, Dell has recycled more than 1 billion pounds since 2008; further, the company is seeking to reach a goal of 2 billion pounds recycled by 2020.
In heralding Dell, Jennifer Jehn, president and CEO of KAB, says, “While Dell has been a trailblazing technology company, it has also led in the realm of social and environmental sustainability, drawing a solid line from the company’s sustainability initiatives to its business objectives. Keep America Beautiful applauds Dell for applying its heritage of entrepreneurship and innovation to its holistic approach to corporate citizenship.”
“Thank you for this great honor,” says Dell. “I’m very pleased to accept it on behalf of the 100,000 Dell team members around the globe working hard every day to deliver for our customers, our planet and our communities.”
