Wisconsin recycling center catches fire

A Norway, Wisconsin, recycling center caught fire and took between 40 and 50 crews to extinguish, a report by Fox6 News says. The fire broke out Saturday, July 1 at John’s Disposal and was extinguished at 7:30 a.m. July 2.

A former employee told Fox6 News the fire started outside and spread to a pile of tires, then into one of the buildings where cardboard and other recyclables were stored. The flames then came out from the other side of the building and caught a trailer on fire. Employees drove the burning truck away from the fire. Around 9 p.m. July 1, a pile of tires re-ignited.

The report says firefighters faced difficulties putting the flames out because of wind, the lack of hydrants in the area and the flammable material. Firefighters trucked in water, and at least 18 agencies were on-site July 1 evening. Around 6:45 p.m. July 1, a truck from General Mitchell International Airport, Milwaukee, arrived and sprayed foam to put out the flames before the pile of tires re-ignited.
