Recent figures from the Council for PET Bottle Recycling, a Japanese trade association for plastics recyclers, forecasts PET bottle collection to climb to 44.5 percent for 2001 in Japan, a sharp jump from the prior year’s figure of 34.5 percent.
The group also forecasts the total volume of PET bottles collected for recycling would grow to slightly less than 390,000 tons, compared to the previous year’s collection total of 362,000 tons.
The group also sees recycled PET plastic end markets continuing to be dominated by fibers, expected to make up around 56,661 tons of recycled PET; and plastic sheeting, which is estimated to top 40,000 tons for 2001.
