ITAD Technologies, based in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, near Atlanta, has become the first facility operator to attain R2v3 certification, according to Washington-based Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), which administers the certification.
“Many of new requirements in R2v3 were things we were already doing because our customers were asking for those services and controls, especially in the area of data security,” says Jeff Robinson, director of operations for ITAD Technologies, in an interview posted to the SERI website.
Adds Robinson, “The vendors we previously used for physical data destruction, we could no longer use because they didn’t meet the vendor qualifications in Appendix A. So instead, we bought a shredder and decided to do physical destruction in-house. We were already doing logical data sanitization — now all data sanitization is done in-house.”
The R2v3 audit of ITAD Technologies was led by Francisco (Paco) Vazquez of Orion Registrars-Mexico. “Facilities should expect the transition will require a lot of time and education,” he says in the online SERI interview. “The R2 knowledge base offers a lot of help. I tell my clients that when they see their name on the R2 website directory, it will all be worth it.”
