ISRI2018 Recycling Research Foundation Silent Auction sets new records

Money to fund scholarships and industry research.

The Recycling Research Foundation (RRF) has announced that it raised nearly $40,000 through its annual silent auction, which the organization adds is a record amount.

RRF, a nonprofit closely associated with the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), Washington, promotes the art and science of scrap processing and recycling through the research, sponsorships, technical assistance and educational programs.

A record 75 items were donated to the auction this year, which took place during ISRI’s annual convention and exposition in Las Vegas in mid-April. Donations ranged from recycled scrap metal sculptures to photography sessions to electronic accessories. A Smart Metal Loss Monitor from Eriez, Erie, Pennsylvania, received the highest single bid at $12,000, ISRI reports.

“The record number of donations and money raised for the Recycling Research Foundation illustrates the generosity of those that make up the recycling community,” says Robin Wiener, president of ISRI. “These funds will contribute to the future of the industry, both through valuable research that could lead to technological breakthroughs and market developments and by preparing the next generations of industry leaders. A tremendous thank you goes to all those who supported the cause through donations, and bidding on the many items available.”

The money raised during the auction will help fund higher-education initiatives, including RRF’s National Foundation Scholarships and National Veterans Stipend. The National Foundation Scholarship is a $5,000 national scholarship intended to support graduate students participating in a degree program that is applicable to the scrap recycling industry. The National Veterans Stipend of up to $8,000 was created for those who have served in the U.S. armed forces. The stipend covers $2,000 per year and is renewable for up to four years. The deadline for applying for both programs for the coming year is June 1, 2018.
