ISRI to Form Electronics Recycling Council

Group’s board will vote on formation in November.

The board of directors of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), Washington, is expected to approve the formation of an Electronics Recycling Council as a body within the organization.

“ISRI—recognizing that so many of its members are involved in electronics recycling—has decided to establish an Electronics Recycling Council,” ISRI managing director of government relations Scott Horne announced at the association’s Commodity Roundtables event last Friday in Chicago.

According to Horne, a proposal to create the council will be voted on by the board at its November meeting. “From a government affairs standpoint, we are very interested in increasing our activity,” he remarked.

Horne also indicated that ISRI would seek allies in other trade groups as it surveys the budding legislative landscape. “In the past, we’ve been successful at building coalitions in Washington, and that will be a primary goal.”

Referring to results from a survey conducted earlier this year, ISRI director of environmental compliance John Hayworth indicated that more than 350 of ISRI’s member companies—almost 25 percent—are involved in some way in recycling electronic equipment.

Additional studies of the material stream generated by electronic equipment have shown that 49 percent of the content is metallic.

On the legislative front, 19 states have electronics recycling mandates, fees or target rates in place or proposed. The U.S. EPA is also developing rules for dealing with certain types of electronic scrap.
