During the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc.’s (ISRI) annual convention held May 5-8 in San Diego, the organization awarded its Lifetime Achievement Awards to two longtime ISRI and scrap metal recyclers: Tom Salome, an executive with M. Lipsitz, a Waco, Tex., scrap metal recycler; and Marvin Siegel, who began his career in the scrap metal business as a partner in Spartanburg Iron & Metal, Spartanburg, S.C., eventually becoming vice president of OmniSource Corp.

In honoring Salome, ISRI noted that as Lipsitz grew, Salome began his participation in the industry's associations, starting with ISRI’s predecessor, the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel (ISIS). During his five decades in the industry, Salome has held numerous leadership roles in ISRI and its predecessor organizations, including board member, every leadership position in the Gulf Coast Chapter, ISIS finance committee chair and ISRI convention chair.
In recognizing Siegel, ISRI noted that Siegel became active in the industry associations during the 1980s, Siegel became active in the industry associations ISIS and NARI, and later ISRI. He became involved in chapter and national committee work, serving as chapter president and a member of the ISRI board and executive committee. He also played a key role as chair of ISRI’s legislative affairs committee during the struggle to achieve relief from Superfund liability, resulting in the passage of the Superfund Recycling Equity Act in 1999.
