ISRI’s PSI Chapter Names 2018 scholarship recipients

The eight college-bound students receive a $2,000 scholarship for a post-secondary school for the 2018-2019 school year.

The Paper Stock Industries (PSI) Chapter, a national chapter of the Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), has selected eight college-bound students as winners in its annual academic scholarship program. Each student will receive $2,000 to apply toward tuition at any regionally accredited two-year or four-year post-secondary school for the 2018-2019 academic year.

This year’s scholarship winners, along with their sponsoring ISRI/PSI Chapter member company and the school they will be attending, are as follows:

  • Megan Jacques, Pioneer Paper Stock, Minneapolis; University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota;
  • Allison Johnson, Texas Recycling, Dallas; University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson, Texas;
  • Paige Langlois, Casella Waste Systems, Williston, Vermont; University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont;
  • Kaitlyn Nugent, WestRock, Creve Coeur, Missouri; Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Michigan;
  • Emma Reed, WestRock, Solvay New York; SUNY Geneseo, Geneseo, New York;
  • Gabrielle Sanchez, Caraustar, Green Bay, Wisconsin; University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point, Stevens Point, Wisconsin;
  • Zachary Snider, CellMark, Norwalk, Connecticut; Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts;
  • Tracy Westra, Resource Management Companies, Chicago Ridge, Illinois; Hope College, Holland, Michigan.

To apply for a PSI Chapter scholarship, applicants must have a C+ average or better in high school, meet all admission qualifications at the two-year or four-year post-secondary school of their choice and be a dependent of an individual who has been employed for at least one year by a company that is a current active member of ISRI and the PSI Chapter. The employee must work in the recycling division of the member company, and the applicant cannot be a dependent of a company officer or principal.

In addition to completing a PSI Chapter scholarship application, applicants must submit an official transcript of their high school grades, SAT or ACT scores, two letters of recommendation, a resume of their personal history and a one-page essay.

The PSI Chapter supports its academic scholarships through raffles, donations and an annual fundraising bowling tournament in conjunction with the Paper & Plastics Recycling Conference North America, which the chapter co-sponsors. This year, the PSI Chapter bowling tournament is scheduled for Oct. 17, in Chicago at Lucky Strike.

Disbursements for the PSI Chapter scholarships are made through the Recycling Research Foundation, a nonprofit organization closely associated with ISRI.
