Jason Learning, a nonprofit organization dedicated to science education based in Ashburn, Virginia, and the Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) have announced the 2022 “Recycling Video and Poster” contest. The annual contest encourages K-12 students to develop public service announcements on why recycling is essential, how it can help combat climate change and how the community can help.

“This is an incredible opportunity for students to learn more about recycling, its importance and the ways that we can help fight climate change through simple recycling actions,” says Eleanor Smalley, president and CEO of Jason Learning

The winner and a parental guardian will be invited to the 2022 ISRI Convention & Exhibition in Las Vegas for recognition by both ISRI and Jason Learning during the conference. In the event the convention is not able to occur, a presentation will be facilitated online or in the winner’s hometown. Finalists’ videos and posters will be featured on both the Jason Learning and ISRI websites. Jason Learning also will give access to its digital platform, an extensive library of STEM learning curriculum and resources to the winner’s entire school.

“As the recycling industry grows and evolves, it is important to ensure a steady supply of skilled workers both now and in the future,” says Robin Wiener, president of ISRI. “ISRI and Jason Learning’s youth education curricula and outreach program provide a preview into the work of the recycling industry while encouraging students to consider the many career paths the industry provides. We look forward to the contest entries highlighting the many ways recycling is essential to the health of the planet.”

According to a joint news release, experts from ISRI and Jason Learning will have live “Ask-an-Expert” events Oct. 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. EST and Nov. 2 from 4 to 5 p.m. EST. The experts at the events will go over the recycling contest, give tips and answer questions.

Additionally, Jason Learning is hosting a virtual workshop Oct. 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. EST where educators can learn more about how to get their students involved in this opportunity and explore ISRI’S Recycling: ISRI Activities Collection for free. This workshop is free, and educators can register here.

In the Recycling: ISRI Activities Collection, students explore the benefits and challenges of sustainable recycling through a variety of activities ranging from physics and chemistry to engineering and human impacts, while becoming careful consumers.
