ISRI Creates Two New Councils

Electronics recycling, small member needs addressed.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), Washington, has created two new councils to serve portions of its membership base

In addition to approving the previously reported creation of an Electronics Recycling  Council, the organization has also formed a Small Member Council to provide a forum “to discuss issues unique to members with gross revenues of less than $5 million

As previously announced at the ISRI Commodity Roundtable in September, the Electronics Recyclers Council will seek allies in other trade groups as its members become increasingly involved in the recycling of obsolete computers and consumer electronics.

Referring to results from a survey conducted earlier this year, ISRI director of environmental compliance John Hayworth indicated that more than 350 of ISRI’s member companies—almost 25 percent—are involved in some way in recycling electronic equipment. Additional studies of the material stream generated by electronic equipment have shown that 49 percent of the content is metallic.

According to ISRI president Robin Weiner and the ISIR board of directors, the Small Member Council is designed to help ensure that ISRI remains responsive to smaller member companies.

In other news involving ISRI, the organization’s Ferrous Division and its new Tire & Rubber Division are working together to draft specifications for steel derived from recycled tires.
