Ineos Styrolution has launched sour cream cups made with 30 percent recycled polystyrene (PS), available in ALDI SÜD stores across Germany since the beginning of this year.

The packaging, developed in partnership with ALDI SÜD and Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller, marks a major step forward in scaling sustainable food packaging for mass-market use, Ineos says, adding that the cups were recognized with the German Packaging Award in the “Sustainability: recycled content” category in July.

Ineos Styrolution, also based in Germany, says this is the second commercial rollout of food-grade recycled PS with a leading retailer in the country.

“Ineos Styrolution is turning the promise of recycled polystyrene into a practical reality,” says Rob Buntinx, the company’s president, EMEA. “We’re proving that circular solutions can meet both food safety standards and performance demands. We’re calling on the entire value chain to join us in making circularity the new normal.”

The company says its move comes as the packaging industry prepares for stricter European Union rules under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Ineos already has submitted a formal EFSA application for its novel recycling technology, which it says underscores its commitment to regulatory compliance and innovation.
