Industry Groups Seek Changes to Oregon Recycling Laws

Associations seek to ease back recycled-content figures for plastic

A group of industry associations in Oregon are seeking changes to the state’s law on recycling rigid plastic containers.

A petition seeking an amendment on the law was filed earlier this month by Paul Cosgrove on behalf of the following groups: the Soap & Detergent Association; Adhesive and Sealant Council; American Chemistry Council; Associated Oregon Industries; Consumer Specialty Products Association; Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association; Grocery Manufacturers Association/Food Products Association; Northwest Food Processors Association; Oregonians for Food and Shelter; Plastic Shipping Container Institute; and Rigid Plastic Packaging Group.

The groups are requesting the state EQC to amend the state’s recycling and waste reduction rules. One area the group seeks to change is wording in the state law. The law stipulates that rigid plastic containers shall have at least 25 percent recycled content to comply with state law.

The groups requesting a change are seeking wording that would allow product manufacturers may achieve compliance with the 25 percent option based on the average recycled content of their containers. Averaging may be calculated using either data specific to containers sold in Oregon or containers sold nationwide.
