The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is working with local agencies to clean up a closed scrap yard in Union County, Ind.
Assistance from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is cleaning up a long-time junkyard in Union County.
The scrap yard, called Redd Salvage, has been closed since the owner passed away. According to local press reports the Union Circuit Court has ruled that the yard is prohibited from bringing in any more scrap material while the estate is pending in court.
The IDEM issued a grant to an Ohio-based company called Liberty Tire to remove roughly 7,000 tires from the site. Money for the cleanup came from the agency’s tire management fund, which is funded by a tax on tires purchased in the state.
While Liberty is shredding the tires, a local school is seeking to use the crumb rubber to augment the grass at its athletic fields.Latest from Recycling Today
