Thirteen Indiana communities will receive their share of $317,473 in recycling grants that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management announced. Grant money will be used for equipment, education materials and promotional materials to advance community recycling programs.
Thomas Easterly, IDEM commissioner, said, “I am pleased to announce the grant awards for recycling. These communities have taken the initiative to establish recycling programs, which have diverted usable materials from going to landfills and put money back into the economy. Each community can make a tremendous difference. For example, in 2004, Indiana state government employees in Marion County recycled over 1,101 tons of materials. The state realized $34,450 in the sale of these materials for recycling and saved an estimated $42,250 in trash-hauling fees. If the government center can realize this kind of impact, just imagine the impact that our towns and cities can make.”
