India Considers Reduction in Scrap Metal Import Duty

Government minister notes that duty on scrap imports hurt steel business.

According to published reports, the Indian Steel Ministry has forwarded a note to Central Board of Excise and Customs, seeking easing of duty on import of scraps used by secondary steel producers.

"We have recommended further easing of duty on scrap import. The ministry is of the view that the secondary steel maker suffered due to shortage of this crucial raw material," said J P Singh, Joint Secretary in Steel Ministry at a seminar.

However, he added, that "It was difficult for the government to relax import norms when blasts were occurring near the plant site" -- apparently referring to a blast that occurred last week in a scrap debris near Ghaziabad as it contained live shells.

On the steel policy announced on November 4, Singh said the ministry has just outlined the demand of steel and production level to surface over the next 15 years.

The ministry was preparing an action plan, which would take care of all concerns regarding raw materials and iron ore.

"We will give equal importance to both primary and steel makers in the new action plan. The strategy note would incorporate detailed requirements for steel sector," he said. The Economic Times
