In Memoriam: Sandy Newman

Founder of Newman Scrap Brokerage dies at age 78.

Sandy Newman, a well-known figure in the stainless steel industry, passed away May 23, 2009, at the age of 78. 

 

During his career, Newman worked in purchasing at Jessop Steel in Washington, Pa., before moving in 1967 to the Charles Bluestone Scrap Co. in   Elizabeth, Pa. He was responsible for establishing and managing Bluestone’s stainless steel and alloy scrap business. 

 

Newman left Bluestone in 1974 to become a principal and executive vice president of the newly formed Pittsburgh Alloys, the stainless steel scrap subsidiary of the former Vac Air Alloys.

 

He finished his career as owner and president of Newman Scrap Brokerage.

 

Newman was an active member of the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel (ISIS) and the National Association of Recycling Industries (NARI), the predecessors to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), during which time he chaired numerous stainless and alloy committees.

 

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Arlene, three children and 10 grandchildren.
