Imco Recycling Inc. announced that it will expand its Saginaw, Mich., plant by 50 percent to "significantly increase" aluminum alloy shipments to General Motors Corp.
Imco agreed to increase its supply as part of an amendment to a 13-year contract that the two companies announced in 1999.
General Motors' Saginaw metal casting operations unit will use the additional supply of aluminum alloy to manufacture a new all-aluminum V8 engine for full-size sports utility vehicles.
Don V. Ingram, Imco's chairman and CEO, called the plant expansion and shipment increase "an important step forward in our global strategy to increase the company's participation in the transportation sector."
To expand the Saginaw facility, Imco said it would add more melting, processing and environmental equipment. The expansion project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
