The City Council for Canton, Ill., voted April 6 to conditionally award a bid of $1,163,000 to N.E. Finch for the demolition of all remaining structures at the old International Harvester site. The contract will be finalized pending the city attorney's review and approval of a related insurance policy.
Council was unanimous on the IH demolition contract. City Attorney Ron Weber asked to be authorized to sign it after completing his review of a 123-page insurance policy. He said he needed another day or so to study it to be certain asbestos removal was not excluded from the policy. Council agreed.
The Canton City Council had authorized to seek bids for the asbestos abatement and building demolition of the remaining buildings on the 33-acre former International Harvester factory site in February. The 150+ year old site has been mostly vacant since International Harvester left the facility in 1984.
The demolition project is part of a large environmental clean-up and redevelopment project that has been underway since a fire gutted the facility in 1997.
Weber told those in attendance no property is being rezoned, and taxes are not being raised.
The city plans to issue municipal bonds at low interest rates to finance the demolition work at the IH site, which Weber said was expected to begin within 180 days. Those bonds later will be paid off from proceeds of TIF district revenues. (Canton, Illinois) Daily Ledger
