Illinois AG Reaches Agreement with Mill Services Company

Agreement includes penalty, resumption of program to reduce pollutants.

Stein Steel Mill Services has reached at agreement with the state of Illinois’ Attorney General’s office to settle alleged air pollution violations.

Under the agreement, Stein Steel Mill will pay a $15,000 penalty and continue a program to more closely monitor dust and ash generated during its slag processing operation in Granite City, Ill.

Stein reclaims metallic elements from slag it receives from U.S. Steel – Granite City Works.

A 2001 complaint filed by the Attorney General at the request of the IEPA cited Stein for alleged excessive dust on roadways, the skimmer slag pit and other facilities. In addition, the company failed to maintain the watering system at the skimmer and keep proper records on its premises of measures taken to control air pollution.

The proposed agreement was filed earlier this week with the Illinois Pollution Control Board, and it requires the company to continue its efforts at identifying areas on roads and storage piles where water sprays are necessary to minimize the escape of dust and ash.
