Hydro Aluminum Metal Products-North America is breaking ground this month on a $37 million aluminum recycling facility in Commerce, Tex. The recycling plant is expected to be complete by next November.
Finished products at the plant will go toward the transportation and construction sectors. At full capacity the facility will have a capacity of 90,000 metric tons a year. A similar facility is being operated in Kentucky.
In the past seven years, Hydro Aluminum has developed a network of these plants throughout Europe. The Kentucky and Texas plants are part of a three-plant network being considered for the United States, according to Lars Narzestad, senior vice president of Hydro Aluminum.
"We have discussed building a plant in the Northeast, but there are no firm plans yet," said Narzestad.
Each plant can supply aluminum billet to customers within a 400-mile radius, he said.
