The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has recertified 74 aluminum recycling and extrusion sites of The Hydro Extrusions business unit of Norway-based Norsk Hydro ASA.
Hydro says the recertification of Hydro Extrusions to the Performance Standard created by the Australia-based ASI has been completed at the more than six dozen sites, calling the comprehensive certification “the most among aluminum extrusion companies.”
“Customers want suppliers that are reliable, responsible and forward thinking [and] this is more proof,” says Paul Warton, executive vice president of Hydro Extrusions.
The recertification according to the ASI Performance Standard V3.1 was audited by DNV Assurance Services UK Ltd. and is valid for three years, through the end of May 2028.
The Performance Standard has been designed to recognize the responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminum, according to the aluminum producer.
The recertification covers several activities at Hydro Extrusions, including aluminum ingot casting, rolling of aluminum coils and strips, extrusion, fabrication and surface finishing of aluminum profiles, and the manufacturing of aluminum tubes.
Of the 74 production sites covered, 42 are in Europe, 25 are in North America, five are in South America and the remaining two are in Asia.
“I am very proud of this because it is the first time we are using the new, more stringent version of the ASI Performance Standard,” Hydro Extrusions Sustainability Director Jean-Marc Moulin says.
Additionally, more than 75 percent of the same extrusion sites have been certified according to ASI’s Chain of Custody (CoC) standard, says Hydro. That standard pertains more directly to inbound and outbound materials, potentially including their recycled content.
“It means not only that the sites and their practices are certified, but that the physical metal they process is also certified, when sourced from upstream suppliers that also hold dual ASI Performance Standard and CoC certification,” Hydro Extrusions says.
