HP Reports on Environmental, Social Achievements in 2005

Company recycled 140 million pounds of computer hardware and print cartridges in 2005.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP has announced its 2006 Global Citizenship Report, which describes the company’s global citizenship activities worldwide and outlines its progress in three areas—reducing product environmental impacts, raising social and environmental responsibility standards in the supply chain and increasing access to information technology.

In fiscal year 2005, HP recycled 140 million pounds of computer hardware and print cartridges. The company says this is nearly 17 percent more than it recycled in 2004. HP’s goal is to recycle 1 billion pounds of materials by the end of 2007.

In 2005, HP also completed 85 audits against its supplier code of conduct in China, Czech Republic, Hungary, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland and Thailand, exceeding its goal of auditing 75 sites.

HP also says that it has increased access to information technology in more than 40 countries across six continents through its e-inclusion and philanthropy and education initiatives.

Where applicable, HP’s Global Citizenship Report uses Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines as a basis for its reporting. The GRI is a multi-stakeholder institution that publishes globally applicable sustainability reporting guidelines.
