Hewlett-Packard Co. has introduced a free recycling service for business customers across much of Europe.
Customers can return IT hardware to a collection point for treatment in accordance with the European Union's new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, HP said. The directive makes vendors responsible for taking back and recycling electrical equipment.
Businesses can arrange transport of the equipment themselves or negotiate fees with HP's recycling contractors. The recycling itself is free. HP already offered a similar service but it carried restrictions over the volume and type of products that could be returned.
Some countries missed the Aug. 13 deadline for implementing the new WEEE laws, but HP is introducing its service across Europe now. It is available in the EU countries along with Switzerland and Norway, HP said. Businesses can use the service at http://www.hp.com/recycle.
HP is also arranging collection schemes for consumers in Europe, it said.
