HP Doubles Hardware Recycling e-Coupon

HP doubles the value on its Planet Partners e-Coupon in honor of Earth Day.

Hewlett-Packard (HP), Palo Alto, Calif., today announced that it will double the value of its HP Planet Partners e-Coupon promotion to encourage the responsible recycling of unwanted computer hardware in recognition of Earth Day.

The program now rewards consumers in the United States with up to $100 toward the purchase of a new product on hpshopping.com when recycling computer hardware through HP's recycling service during April. The recycled hardware can include anything from PCs and printers to servers and scanners from any manufacturer.

"The launch of our e-Coupon pilot program was a huge success, so we're offering an additional incentive to our valued customers in honor of Earth Day," Sam Szteinbaum, vice president, North America Consumer Computing Organization, HP Personal Systems Group, says.

HP's easy-to-use, Web-based recycling service includes doorstep pick-up, reuse and donation evaluation and environmentally sound recycling. HP's recycling facility in Roseville, Calif., is one of the world's largest, currently processing up to 3 million pounds of used equipment monthly. A similar facility is located near Nashville, Tenn.

"With HP Planet Partners, unwanted hardware is recycled in the most environmentally sound manner available. HP's state-of-the-art recycling facilities turn end-of-life products into reusable commodities, and this helps reduce the burden on the earth's resources," Renee St. Denis, HP's Product Recycling Solutions manager, says. "We will continue to explore new ways to educate and encourage customers to recycle responsibly."

The recycling service complements other HP programs that seek to reduce HP's environmental footprint. For example, the HP Planet Partners LaserJet supplies program, in operation since 1992, has helped customers recycle more than 39 million HP LaserJet cartridges worldwide, which represents approximately 50,000 tons of material diverted from landfill. HP Planet Partners also recycles HP inkjet print cartridges.

HP's Design for Environment program is an innovative approach to designing products that are more energy efficient and use fewer materials. A strong link exists between the recycling and design teams so that new products are designed to be easier to recycle.

HP also encourages environmental leadership among its employees through its company-wide Sustainability Network, a group of volunteers who advocate for environmentalism and community involvement. HP's Sustainability Network will honor Earth Day with employee celebrations at HP sites throughout the United States. The "Earth Day is Every Day" employee events will include community outreach, live music and dance performances, raffles, vendor fairs and electric vehicle displays.
