Honolulu Approves Curbside Program

Program goes into effect July of next year.

The Honolulu City Council voted unanimously to mandate curbside recycling. The council vote reverses an earlier decision by Mayor Mufi Hannemann to table the program. The ordinance, Bill 72, would require the city to begin islandwide curbside recycling by July 2007.

By July 1, 2007, the city will have to begin picking up two of the following materials: glass containers, newspapers, plastic containers, green waste or food waste. By July 1, 2008, they will have to pick up two more, for a total of four.

The ordinance also stipulates that the director may contract with a private company to perform the sorting, processing and marketing of the material.
