Seattle area homebuilding company Bennett Homes has joined the King County (Wash.) Construction Works program, largely because of its on-site recycling and its use of recycled-content products.
Bennett’s interest in green building has included its construction of the Green Idea Home in the Issaquah Highlands development, which was completed in February of this year.
For the model home, Bennett Homes used recycled-content materials in its construction, including finger jointed studs, cellulose insulation, composition roofing, and recycled-content gypsum board. Other partially recycled-content products used included ceramic tile, carpet, and floor and roof sheathing.
The company also recycled 85 percent of its scrap materials on the jobsite by recycling asphalt shingles, drywall, metals, wood, land clearing debris, and cardboard. Bennett used engineered wood products as well as used building materials, and says it has promoted its recycling ethic to suppliers and customers.
Companies with a presence in King County who become Construction Works members receive a range of benefits including public recognition and technical assistance to set up job site recycling programs, according to the King County Department of Natural Resources.Latest from Recycling Today
