Danish company HJHansen Recycling Group has acquired a 75 percent stake in HJM Recycling Køge A/S in Køge, Denmark, which is in the Zealand region.
Zealand also is home to Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, and the city of Roskilde.
With this acquisition, HJHansen, which describes itself as Denmark’s largest metal recycler, significantly strengthens its position on Zealand.
HJHansen Recycling Group CEO Mogens Bach Christensen tells Recycling Today the company has been working on this transaction for more than a year.
"The site is a state-of-the-art scrapyard," he says. "And the the location is very attractive for us. We already secured some land in [the] Port of Køge. Now we do not have to build on our own."
In the fall of 2023, HJHansen Recycling Group, headquartered in Odense, Denmark, took over a lease at Køge Port. Until now, the site has not been used, but with the acquisition of HJM Recycling Køge, the site is ready to receive metal for recycling in Køge.
“Køge is a strategically important location for us, and by acquiring a majority shareholding in HJM Recycling Køge, we are strengthening our logistics setup and our service offering to scrap suppliers on Zealand,” Christensen says. “When the opportunity to acquire HJM Recycling Køge arose, it was an obvious choice to pursue it. HJM Recycling Køge already operates a well-functioning site with a 150-meter quay, which fits well with our logistics model, where we prioritize sea transport.
"The location is a perfect fit for our company infrastructure. And access to quay is crucial for us."
The company expects to handle more than 100,000 metric tons per year at the port now that it's operational there.
HJHansen Recycling Group’s activities are spread across 30 locations in Denmark and Sweden, and the site in Køge will become the Group’s 10th port facility.
HJHansen Recycling Group already operates port facilities in Zealand at Prøvestenen in Copenhagen and in Korsør. With the new setup in Køge, the foundation for serving the Zealand market has been further strengthened, the company says.
HJM Recycling owner Jesper Olsen welcomes the collaboration.
“I see strong synergies between the two companies as we both work hard to be the Danish companies’ preferred partner for recycling iron and metal," he says. "Going forward, this will take place through a close partnership that builds on our respective strengths in local market knowledge and efficient logistics solutions.”
Operations at HJM Recycling’s site in Køge will continue as before, and Olsen will remain part of the executive management of HJM Recycling Køge A/S for the time being.
