Herbold Meckehseim USA
Herbold Meckesheim USA, Smithfield, Rhode Island, released its SMS Series granulators. The heavy-duty knife granulators are designed for challenging applications that require high throughput. The company has eight models available with throughputs ranging from 440 pounds per hour to 17,600 pounds per hour.
A removable deflection wedge comes as standard on all of the SMS models, Herbold reports in a news release on the new granulators. The SMS Series introduces a third bed knife that improves the granulator’s ability to efficiently process heavy lumps, thick-walled pipes, thick sheets and other dense items. When the deflection wedge is removed, there is more space in the feed opening and destruction chamber, which facilitates the size reduction of large, bulky items.
SMS Series granulators feature rotor and bed knives mounted at opposing angles. According to Herbold, this configuration ensures a uniform cutting gap across the entire length of the knife resulting in greater rotational inertia, reduced energy requirements, and regrind with few fines and improved bulk density.
An optional complete wear protection package is available for processing abrasive materials, including glass-filled plastics, Herbold says.
Rotor and bed knives are adjusted in a fixture outside of the machine prior to installation, which helps to reduce downtime due to knife changes. To simplify routine maintenance and knife changes, the SMS granulators are constructed in a two-piece, split-hinged design that, when open, allows good access to the cutting chamber, knives and rotor.
According to Herbold, SMS Series granulators can be supplied with a variety of accessories, including in-feed conveyors and sound dampening enclosures.
Herbold Meckesheim USA, a subsidiary of Herbold Meckesheim Germany, designs, manufactures and installs size-reduction equipment and wash-line systems for the plastics industry, specializing in the recycling of industrial and postconsumer plastics.
