Herbold Meckesheim GmbH of Germany reports it will be presenting its newest plastic processing equipment, granulators and shredders at the FAKUMA 2015 event, set for Oct. 13-17.

The equipment manufacturer says the latest machinery is designed for efficiency of operations and energy use.
The company will be presenting its Plastcompactor, designed to agglomerate a variety of plastic materials after washing and separation. The company says the equipment is suitable for processing thermoplastic materials such as fibres, small tapes, foams, films, stretch or thin films, fine particles, powder or shavings, and plastic materials that are difficult to convey, stock and mix (moist or dry).
According to Herbold, the agglomerated material shows excellent flow properties and a high bulk density. As a side benefit, the company says, the agglomeration process achieves an efficient separation of residual humidity. Herbold plastcompactors are available for throughputs of up to 1500 grams per hour, the company says.
In many cases, Herbold says, the production of agglomerate with a plastcompactor is a permanent well-priced alternative to a recycling extruder.
The company says the granulators offer higher throughputs, lower energy consumption, even rotor loads and automatic treatment of larger product quantities.
In addition, Herbold says the construction design of the SMS Series granulators from Herbold Meckesheim GmbH has been improved so as to handle the most demanding heavy duty applications in a single step.
These machines feature rotor widths ranging from 600 to 2000 millimeters and with drive capacities between 45 and 315 kilowatts. The knife design is segmental, thus ensuring a quick and easy exchange of the cutting tools. Typical applications are heavy, thick-walled semi-finished products in polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyoxymethylene (POM) and polyamide (PA), pipes with high wall thicknesses and large purgings. The company says the SMS series can also be used with other difficult to grind materials, such as aramid fibres (commonly used for manufacturing bullet-proof vests), carbon fibres and composite materials. This is possible thanks to the SMS series rotor design, the company says, because the rotor is forged as a single piece and rotor knives are fixed at a stopper. The company says the design also prevents “dead spots” where material rests can deposit.
Herbold Meckesheim also says it can supply wear-plated rotors and housings equipped with an exchangeable wear zone for cost savings compared with time-consuming armoring of the housing and rotor.

For processing extremely large waste plastic pipes up to a diameter of 3 meters Herbold Meckesheim has designed the new HOS series oscillating shredder utilizing a rasp feature. The shredder offers an oscillating size-reduction surface capable of shredding extremely large pipes with lengths of up to 6 meters in asingle step.
The company says the shredder offers very low noise operation and is an excellent value. It is also suitable for use with abrasive materials (e.g. fibreglass-reinforced plastics) and offers low energy consumption for bulky feed materials, according to Herbold.
